Music has always been an integral part of the Jewish religious experience. We’re just turning up the volume on meaning.
Seder & Song is the first season of a new audio project produced by the Drisha Institute for Jewish Education. Each episode picks up Jewish text, liturgy in particular, and examines it through lenses of literary analysis, religious meaning, and melody. Scholars, students, and musicians come together to share the questions, answers, and tunes of our heritage. Focusing on the Haggadah, Seder & Song is a conversation between Rabbi David Silber, a clarinet played by Mr. Andy Statman, a piano played by Mr. Abaye Steinmetz-Silber, and Ms. No’a bat Miri

We are pleased to welcome you to the second season of Drisha's music and liturgy project, recently given the name Gilu Bir'ada. The new season, Reverence & Reverie, takes us into the sounds and sentiments of the High Holidays.

We are proud to reintroduce Mr. Andy Statman on clarinet, and Mr. Abaye Steinmetz-Silber on piano. It is also our honor to welcome Ms. Laura Melnicoff on cello, and Mr. Jordan Hirsch on trumpet.

Rabbi David Silber provides framing by discussing the purpose of the prayers and emotions of the Rosh Hashanah services, but our focus is on the niggunim (of primarily chasidic origins) performed by our musicians. It is our hope that you enjoy the series, but also that it helps to imbue your holiday experience with a richer, more nuanced, perhaps even more melodious sense of meaning.

The three Rosh Hashanah episodes will debut on Facebook and YouTube at 4PM Eastern the week of September 18th, on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. All three Yom Kippur episodes will debut on Thursday, the 29th of September. The audio will also be available on Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and SoundCloud as the uploads are processed and approved.
